L’histoire
One day, Clémence (Pauline Clément) realizes that no one has ever admired her. Nurtured by the illusions of a chaotic childhood, she meets a certain Paul (Arthur Dupont), a small, authoritative boss who is not impressed by anything or anyone. She then decides that it is time for her to ask herself the only question that matters: “What if I am worth more than I think?“
Our opinion
Pauline Clément has a unique destiny. Having passed through the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art, it is through humor, often at the side of her colleague Bertrand Usclat, that she has managed to “breakthrough” and integrate the Comédie-Française, of which she is now a member. Although present in cinema (Les Blagues à Toto, Heureux gagnants), she had not yet had the responsibility of carrying a feature film on her shoulders. This is now accomplished under the guidance of Jean-Luc Gaget, former screenwriter of Solveig Anspach, who propels her as the lead in a romantic comedy.
The sparkle of the actress allows us to connect with her professional, personal, and emotional setbacks, especially since the supporting actors are quite well portrayed, like Loïc Legendre as the witty brother-in-law, Arthur Dupont as a somewhat detestable boss/neighbor but more sensitive than he seems, Quentin Dolmaire as an overly clingy old friend, and Karin Viard… in her own role.
The direction is more basic… and the unfolding of events, although not unpleasant, gives the impression of interconnected intentions, without forming a cohesive whole.
Special mention to Bruno Podalydès as the mysterious seer, and one thinks, during the screening, that his whimsy, in directing, would have truly allowed this “Golden Girl” to shine.
COMEDY (France, 1 hr 26 min). Directed by Jean-Luc Gaget, starring Paul Clément, Arthur Dupont, Émilie Caen. Our rating: 3/5.
