At least 19 dead after major earthquake off southern Philippinespublished at 09:07 BST
At least 19 people have died after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines, according to civil defence officials.
Here’s what we’ve covered today:
- The earthquake struck off the southern island of Mindanao
- At least 134 people have been injured, according to a civil defence office spokesperson – these numbers have to be finally verified by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
- The quake triggered tsunami warnings in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. Limited waves ranging from a few centimetres to 1.4m (4.6ft) were later observed. Australia and New Zealand also issued tsunami warnings soon after the quake struck but lifted them soon after
- Videos and images show buildings, including a Jollibee restaurant, being reduced to rubble
- The quake coincided with the start of the new school year in the Philippines. Classes in quake-hit areas been suspended, Philippine President Bongbong Marcos said
- The city of General Santos, near the quake’s epicentre, is known as the country’s tuna capital
- Evacuation and relief efforts are underway. President Marcos says the government “will not leave Mindanao behind”, while the Philippine Red Cross says it’s on the “highest alert”

Death toll rises to 19 – authoritiespublished at 08:45 BST

The death toll from the quake has risen to 19, according to a spokesperson from the Philippine civil defence office.
The fatalities will need to still need to be verified and validated by the official disaster agency, they cautioned.
There are also seven people missing, the spokesperson said.
The number of injured now stands at 134.

While most of these quakes pass relatively peacefully, some can prove to be deadly.
Last September, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck the central Visayas region, killing more than 70 people.
Days later another eight people were killed when two powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Davao Oriental in Mindanao.

Affected area faces ‘major earthquake-generating structure’published at 08:26 BST

The affected provinces face the Cotabato Trench, a “major earthquake-generating structure”, according to the Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology.
The trench is capable of generating minor to great earthquakes, Phivolcs says.
This morning, a “subduction” occured along the trench, Phivolcs says. This happens when one tectonic plate slides beneath another plate.

Earthquake also caused damage in Indonesiapublished at 08:14 BST
The earthquake was also felt in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, more than 200km (124mi) away from the epicentre.

FCDO issues safety guidance in quake-hit parts of the Philippinespublished at 07:43 BST
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued safety guidance for the Mindanao region after the earthquake.
If you’re in the affected area, follow the advice of local authorities and avoid damaged buildings, the FCDO says.
And if you’re planning to travel to Mindanao, contact your travel provider for updates and ensure your travel insurance covers natural disasters, it adds.

Toll from earthquake now 15 dead and 129 injured – officialspublished at 07:10 BST

The death toll from the magnitude-7.8 earthquake now stands at 15, according to officials from the Philippine Office of Civil Defense.
According to local civil defence office director Rodrigo Sosme̱a, 12 of the fatalities were reported in Soccsksargen Рa region spanning four provinces and one city: South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.
At least 129 people were reportedly injured in the region, he added.

Philippines earthquake disrupts school openingpublished at 06:14 BST
The earthquake struck as the new school year began in the Philippines.
Videos posted on social media showed young students screaming in fear as the ground shook violently. Teachers were seen hugging young children and trying to keep them calm.

Minor tsunami waves recorded in six areas of Mindanao – Phivolcspublished at 05:32 BST
Tsunami waves have been recorded in six areas of Mindanao, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
The affected areas are mostly along Mindanao’s southern coast.
The waves were observed between 07:42 and 08:45 local time (23:42 to 00:45 GMT). The highest of the recorded waves measured 1.4m (4.6ft).
The tsunami warning for the Philippines remains in place, the agency told reporters.

Quake triggers 138 aftershocks – Philippine authoritiespublished at 05:16 BST
Since the initial magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off the Philippines’ southern coast, 138 aftershocks have been recorded as of 11:00 local time (03:00 GMT), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
The magnitudes of these aftershocks range from 1.3 to 6.7.

Police have confirmed that the earthquake has killed at least three people and injured five others.
They estimate that the quake also damaged 37 buildings, mostly commercial.

Tsunami warnings in Philippines remain in forcepublished at 04:38 BST
Philippine authorities say tsunami warnings remain in force as waves are still being recorded following a 7.8M earthquake that struck the south of the country.
“We will not yet lift the tsunami warning as our instruments are still recording tsunami waves. There were also sea level disturbances that were recorded,†Winchelle Ian Sevilla, a science research specialist at the state vulcanology agency has told local outlet ONE News.
The waves measured “a couple of centimetres” in height, he adds.

Reports of casualties still being verifiedpublished at 03:58 BST
We are seeing reports of deaths, however these have yet to be confirmed officially.
Authorities are verifying at least five reported deaths, Reuters reports.
A police official has told AFP that at least one person has died and four are injured.
Diego Mariano, an information officer from the Philippine national disaster agency, says reports of casualties are being monitored.
There has also been reports of major damage across various infrastructure, he says.
He warns the public to avoid re-entering their homes or other buildings, especially those with signs of damage.

Tsunami waves observed in Indonesia and the Philippines – USGSpublished at 03:48 BST
Tsunami waves have been recorded in Palau, Davao in the Philippines and Northern Sulawesi province in Indonesia, according to the US Geological Survey.
The waves in two areas of Palau measured 0.1ft (3cm). In two locations in Northern Sulawesi, the waves measured 0.3ft (9cm) and 2.7ft (0.8m). As for Davao, a 1.5ft (0.5m) wave was recorded.
Meanwhile, a tsunami advisory issued earlier for Guam and Northern Mariana Islands has been cancelled, the USGS said in an update.
