The United States and Iran declared, this Friday, June 12, that they were close to an agreement to end the conflict that began on February 28, with a senior American official arguing that a text satisfactory to both parties had been drafted.

Pakistan, the mediator country in the matter, reported that an agreement had been reached between the two belligerents, although neither Tehran nor Washington confirmed the existence of such a compromise. The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araqchi, declared for his part that an agreement has never been so close to being signed between the two parties.

Announced the evening before by Donald Trump as an “excellent” agreement, the protocol was made public in broad terms on Friday by the Islamic Republic via Iranian state media.

Iran deal imminent, US official says

The United States and Iran are not quite at the end of the road yet, but are very close to an agreement to resolve their conflict, a senior American official told Reuters on Friday, adding that Washington expects to sign an agreement in the coming days.

“The negotiating team has put us in a very favorable position, but let’s see, we’re not quite there yet, but we’re very close,” the US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official said the agreed terms achieve U.S. President Donald Trump’s primary goals and “put the country in a very, very favorable situation ultimately.” According to the official, the terms of this memorandum of understanding provide for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the American blockade of Iranian ports. Iranian highly enriched uranium would also be destroyed on site and then evacuated from the country, he said.
