A 1-year-old boy has died and two 6-year-olds are in critical condition after a tragic apartment fire in the Bronx on Monday afternoon.

Police received a call about a fire on the second floor of a building on Bainbridge Ave. in the Fordham section. The blaze quickly spread to other floors, prompting heroic rescues by firefighters. Witnesses described seeing large orange flames shooting from the windows.

Emergency services rushed the three injured children, two boys and a girl, to St. Barnabas Hospital. Tragically, the 1-year-old boy did not survive. Two adults and two firefighters also sustained injuries during the incident.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) suspects that open doors in the building may have worsened the situation. They emphasized the importance of closing apartment doors during fires to prevent the spread of flames and give others a chance to escape.

The FDNY responded to the fire with 80 firefighters and EMS personnel, resulting in 10 residents being displaced. The community is mourning the loss of the young child and hoping for the recovery of the injured children.
