OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – An Omaha man who has been a registered sex offender since 1987 was arrested Friday after police said he broke into a home, got naked, entered a sleeping child’s room, and pinned the child down.
Lavern Scott, 65, appeared in court Monday and is charged with attempted class 2 felony, burglary, and failure to register as a sex offender after previous violations.
According to Omaha Police, officers responded to an apartment near Leavenworth and S 13th Street on Friday around 1 a.m. for a reported burglary and child abuse.
Police met with residents who said a man, later identified as Scott, had entered the home through an unlocked front door and then took off his clothes before entering a sleeping child’s room.
“The suspect then got into bed” with the child, who woke up and began screaming for a family member. “The suspect pinned the child to the bed and set his legs in, using his feet as hooks to hold the child in place,” the report reads.
A family member entered the room and found Scott standing at the foot of the bed with a bottle of water and a bottle of lotion. They “escorted” Scott out of the home and locked the door.
When the family member went to bring Scott’s clothes out of the apartment, Scott had left the scene, according to police.
One block west, police received calls from residents of an Airbnb that Scott had entered the home, claiming it was his. The residents also “removed” Scott from the building.
Scott was later found by police at a nearby street corner wearing only socks.
On March 30, 1987, Scott, according to a sex offender violation report, “AKA Cookie MONSTER AKA Cookie X” was convicted of 1st-degree sexual assault in Douglas County and later convicted in 1999 of attempted 1st-degree sexual assault in Madison County.
Scott has been convicted and sentenced for violating the registry in 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2024. As of Friday, he had 2,777 days of noncompliance.
He has also previously been convicted of indecent exposure three times and trespassing six times in Nebraska and numerous times in Council Bluffs, as well.
Scott’s bond was set at $1.25 million. As of Monday afternoon, he is still being held at Douglas County Corrections. His next court date is scheduled for June 1.
