Missing for almost eight years,Stan Lee continues to fascinate and fuel a number of discussions. The man has already been entitled to some very detailed work on his life, in comics as well, but the general public perhaps only knows a meager part of the man – that associated with his image as a mascot ofMarvel Studios. Fortunately, the public service took the time to construct a new documentary program dedicated to the screenwriter, who does not forget to return to his collaborators, and ultimately paints a portrait of the origin and rise to power of superhero comics. With a cast of good company to boot.
On the importance of public service
Broadcast this Sunday on the airwaves ofFrance Culturel’émission documentaire Stan Lee (1922-2018), the face of Marvel superheroesis a good hour long and focuses on recalling the origins of superhero comics with a particular focus onStan Leehis beginnings as a simple assistant toJoe Simon andJack Kirby à son ascension fulgurante à l’édito de Timely Comics and theresuccess story that we know him well… until a much less happy end of life.
The documentary is written byFederico Polo Devoteewith a production ofSomany Na and benefits from the interventions of some important names in the field of American comics in France, withXavier Fournier (journalist and author whose next works on superheroines are expected),Jean-Marc Lainé (author of the biographyStan Lee, Homère du XXe siècle), Lolita Broisiat (doctor of sociology having written his thesis on theEvolution and sociological impact of superheroes from 1938 to 2020), JL Mast (from which we are firmly awaiting the next comic stripGhosts of Marvel Comics - Stan Lee: under the masken VF), Dynamo (specialized bookseller and workshop maker)Central Comics Paris), so thatJulie Escaléan avid reader and collector of comics.Â
A program which will certainly not teach much to regulars of our columns – although, there is always one or another anecdote which may surprise you – but which above all illustrates the importance of seeing comic book authors highlighted on a large channel, so that the general public can also have the opportunity to be interested in those who made the heroes that we find almost everywhere today. The show is available in podcast format below.
