The discussions during the last meeting of the municipal council were lively. After comments from Mayor Pascal Claverie comparing the National Rally to “the Germany of 1933”, elected officials from the UDR-RN opposition group denounced an “unacceptable drift” and demanded a public apology, in a tense climate within the municipal assembly.
“During the last municipal council, Mayor Pascal Claverie dared to compare the National Rally to Germany in 1933. We demand a clear and public apology.” Following the rather lively exchanges during the municipal council last Tuesday, the elected officials of the UDR-RN opposition group led by Éric Peyrègne are scandalized by the intervention of the mayor of Tarbes.
“These comments go beyond the scope of political debate. Making such comments in a municipal setting is particularly serious. They amount to contempt, insult and stigmatization towards elected Republican officials, members, activists and especially thousands of Tarbais voters,” says Véronique indignant Dutrey, elected from the “Tarbes, time for change” group.
“We are respectable women and men, committed to our city and to our fellow citizens, whether Mr. Claverie likes it or not. This is an unacceptable drift for an elected official who claims to be “the mayor of all Tarbais”.”
For the former deputy mayor of Tarbes Gérard Trémège, “in just two months, through his words and his attitude, the mayor has chosen to exclude and despise nearly 36% of Tarbes voters”.
This is why the elected representatives of the group “Tarbes, time for change” are asking for “a clear and public apology, not only to our elected officials and our supporters, but to all Tarbais who felt insulted and despised by these declarations unworthy of the democratic debate. Respect for voters and political pluralism is not a option in a democracy”.
Éric Peyrègne “wants to believe that the mayor has lost his nerve and slipped”
Another elected official from the UDR-RN opposition group, Bruno Despres denounces “an unacceptable and extremely dangerous amalgamation and shortcut. We defend the French whatever their origin and we recall that several members of our list have served France under the flags”.
“Revolted by this insinuation”, Éric Peyrègne “wants to believe that the mayor has lost his nerve and has slipped”, while castigating “a denial of democracy” in the municipal council as in the municipal commission “where nothing happens. We have not been summoned for the safety and health commissions which were part of our priorities like those of the current majority, I believe.”
