Artistic director of the La Naïve company, Sophie Claret responded to the city’s cultural policy: “Culture is you”. To do this, she set up a project and staged it around an all-female group of young actresses, whom she had patiently trained on stage since last September. The piece chosen to take over the NoVa space in Velaux is a manifesto evoking the cracks of a group of young girls, who have been united since childhood. The circulation of an intimate photo of one of them, in an elitist high school, will provoke destabilizing behavior of harassment, sadly very often current in the delicate transition from adolescence to college.
Minimalist staging
Sophie Claret, a trained actress, will support and professionalize eight young girls aged 13 and 16 in 4th, 3rd and second grades. “I wanted them to be super-motivated, like their parents, so that they could be immersed in real professional conditions. Here, there is no role distribution and they evolve in a coherent group. The first months of work were devoted to occupying the boards. In fact, at the beginning there were nine of them, but one of them did not want to be an actress, she found her place elsewhere on the stage and learned all the complexity of the technique inherent in the play.”
The staging is minimalist and without decoration. Only the sounds and visuals project cues and illustrate the cruelty of the plot. Sophie Claret took largesse with the original idea, she cut a lot and showed herself to be super flexible to stick to the expectations, to the current concerns of young actresses, especially to what affected them in this story. An actress herself and with her experience of The Lionessthe self-portrait of Gisèle Halimi, she offered them a space of freedom, of expression to escape social codes. “They are strong, it’s a committed theater, they are feminist and it’s beautiful to see them evolve”continues Sophie Claret, who highlights this sometimes difficult period of adolescence.
