Grand Prix, Jury Prize, female interpretation, Critics’ Week, Un Certain Regard… With around ten awards obtained during the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, ARTE has once again confirmed its place among the major partners of European and international auteur cinema.
On this 2026 Cannes Film Festivalthe Franco-German channel Arte supported nearly thirty films in the various Festival selections, including sixteen directed by women, eight first films, as well as several works from territories rarely represented in the major international charts.
In brief
ARTE at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival
• Before 30 films supported by ARTE were present at Cannes 2026.
• A reward dizaine were obtained in the different sections.
• ART to accompany 16 films made by women.
• 8 premiers films were among the supported productions.
• European co-productions remain at the heart of the economic model of auteur cinema.
Â
In official competition, at Un Certain Regard, at Critics’ Week or even in the sections devoted to first films, the Franco-German channel obtained around ten awards distributed across all of the Festival’s selections.
Beyond the volume, this omnipresence reflects what contemporary European cinema is. A political, international cinema, often co-produced in several territories, carried as much by established authors as by new emerging voices.
Â
Zviaguintsev, Hamaguchi, Pawlikowski: the installed authors dominated the competition
The Grand Prix obtained byMinotaur by Andreï Zviaguintsev was one of the highlights of this edition. The Russian director, already familiar with Cannes, has deployed a dense and frontal cinema, produced between France, Latvia and Germany with the support of ARTE France Cinéma and ZDF.
The presence of ARTE was also established aroundSuddenly de Ryûsuke Hamaguchi. The film won the Female Performance Award for Virginia Efira and Tao Okamoto, while receiving the Ecoprod Award.
This double signal is revealing of current developments in the Festival: Cannes no longer only distinguishes works, but also manufacturing practices and production models.
I agree with youFatherland by Pawel Pawlikowski, awarded a joint Directing Prize. The Polish filmmaker here continues a work of sophisticated European co-production, which has become emblematic of the financing and circulation workflows of contemporary auteur cinema.
Quant à ÂThe dreamed adventure by Valeska Grisebach, Jury Prize, it confirms the growing place of cross-border stories and hybrid writings in the European festival landscape.
Â
New talents have confirmed ARTE’s laboratory role
But Cannes 2026 above all showed to what extent ARTE continues to play a role in detecting and supporting new generations of filmmakers.
À Un Certain Regard, Elephants in the Mist by Abinash Bikram Shah won the Jury Prize as well as the Sound Creation Prize. An important recognition for a Nepalese film built in a particularly vibrant international co-production logic.
As for Critics’ Week,La GradivaMarine Atlan won the Grand Prix, whileTwoBlerta Basholli won the SACD Award.
Through these films, ARTE confirms an editorial strategy rarely so visible: supporting works which do not meet the dominant industrial standards but which actively participate in the renewal of international cinematographic writing.
Â
A European model of co-production still central to Cannes
The 2026 list also illustrates an economic reality that is often less visible to the general public: behind a large part of the world’s auteur cinema, European co-production mechanisms remain decisive.
Most of the films awarded this year involve several countries, several broadcasters, several regional funds or public partners. In this complex architecture, ARTE continues to occupy a unique position: that of an actor capable of securing artistically ambitious projects while offering them international circulation.
With sixteen films directed by women and eight first films selected, the Franco-German channel has also confirmed its ability to support new voices in contemporary cinema.
As global platforms reshape the logic of distribution and financing, this massive presence in the Cannes selection also reminds us of another reality: European auteur cinema still largely continues to be built in historic cultural co-production networks…
