War in Ukraine: a Russian gun captured at the front, the 2S5 Giatsint-S, “turned against its former owners”

A powerful Russian weapon turned against the Russian army. The Ukrainian army released images showing a Russian self-propelled gun captured on the front and returned to service by the 24th Ukrainian brigade. The artillery system was deployed again, but this time against Russian positions, around Chasiv Yar, in Donetsk Oblast.

In the images published and relayed by the specialized Ukrainian media Defense Express, we see the Ukrainian soldiers preparing the cannon, loading it with shells and opening fire towards the Russian positions.

The 24th Ukrainian brigade indicates that the 152 mm gun had been seized on another sector of the front. Rather than dismantling it to recover its spare parts, it chose to repair it to integrate it into its operations.

For the occasion, the cannon was named “Kraken”, symbolizing its new role under Ukrainian command. The cracked weapon “is now turning against its former owners”, the brigade welcomes.

The 2S5 Giatsint-S, valued at more than $4 million (approximately 3.4 million euros), is one of the longest-range Soviet-designed artillery systems still in active use by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Armed with a 152 mm cannon, it can hit targets several tens of kilometers away, depending on the type of ammunition used. Despite its age, the “system remains a formidable weapon thanks to its firepower and its range”, underlines Defense Express.

Last week, Ukrainian drone operators described destroying a Russian 2S5 Giatsint-S self-propelled artillery system using simple FPV attack drones. In the maneuver this time, the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine which was pleased with its masterstroke.
