Iran has questioned the seriousness of American diplomacy in negotiations to resolve the conflict in the Middle East. Despite not disclosing its response to Washington’s latest proposal, Iran’s Foreign Minister expressed skepticism during a phone call with his Turkish counterpart following recent tensions in the Gulf. The recent escalation in tensions by US forces and their ceasefire violations have raised suspicions about the American side’s motivation and seriousness in diplomacy, according to Mr. Araghchi.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Tehran is still evaluating the American proposal aimed at ending hostilities permanently. President Trump expects a response very soon, as reported on May 9. Two Iranian oil tankers were neutralized by the US military in the Gulf of Oman, a strategic passage for global oil trade.

While the vessels were reportedly empty, thick columns of smoke seen in the photos released by Centcom raised concerns. Iran denounced a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire to the UN and confirmed their response. The conflict has resulted in numerous casualties mainly in Iran and Lebanon, impacting the global economy. Oil prices surged above $100 a barrel with tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The UK announced deploying a destroyer to the Middle East, in anticipation of an international security mission in the Strait of Hormuz co-led with France to secure transport.
