DIRECT. War in the Middle East: Donald Trump maintains that the ceasefire with Iran is still in force despite exchanges of strikes

The United States is awaiting Iran’s response on Friday, May 8 to their latest proposed agreement with a view to putting a lasting end to the war in the Middle East, while the two camps have mutually accused each other of attacks during the night, despite the ceasefire. The head of American diplomacy Marco Rubio says he is waiting “during the day” a response from the Iranians. He also warned that Iran should not control the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage for hydrocarbons whose blockage by Tehran since the start of the war on February 28 has shaken the world economy. • The United States struck two Iranian tankers. An American plane “neutralized the two tankers by firing precision munitions into their funnels”preventing them from entering Iran, declared the American command for the region (Centcom) in a press release on the social network X. These two ships were trying to reach an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman, “in violation of the current American blockade”.

• Iran accuses the United States of “blatant violation” of the ceasefire. “The action carried out yesterday [jeudi] evening constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and the ceasefire. However, the country’s defense forces inflicted a heavy blow on the enemy and repulsed his attacks with all their might. said Esmaïl Baghaï, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The United States said it had “targeted Iranian military installations” Thursday after several of their ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.

• The Iranian army says it has seized an oil tanker in the Arabian Sea. “The Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, during a specially planned operation in the Arabian Sea, boarded the offending oil tanker Ocean Koicarrying a cargo of oil belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran”explained the army in a press release relayed by state television. She said the ship had been redirected to the coast of southern Iran after searching for “to harm and disrupt Iran’s oil exports.”

• Hezbollah says it targeted a military base in northern Israel. In a press release, the pro-Iranian formation asserts that the targeted base is located south of Nahariya. This strike comes the day after an Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut which killed a high-ranking commander of the group.

• Donald Trump maintains that the ceasefire is still in effect. “They played with us today [jeudi]. We swept them away. They played. I call it a trifle”declared the American president to journalists. These exchanges of fire come at a time when Washington is still awaiting a response from Tehran to its latest proposal to put a lasting end to the war.
