From May 14 to October 11, 2026, the Royal City of Loches (37) invites the public to rediscover a reimagined, fantastical Middle Ages – inspired by cinema. Under the theme “Cinema in the Middle Ages”, one of the emblematic monuments of the Loire Valley sheds light on over a century of images, stories, and symbols that have shaped our collective imagination. From “Visiteurs du soir” to “Kaamelott”, this exhibition aims to appeal to history enthusiasts as well as fans of the 7th art.
The Middle Ages holds a special place in cinematic culture. Over 600 films have explored knights, castles, battles, legendary heroes, or Arthurian myths “to create a universe at the frontier of reality and wonder.” This exhibition offers a journey through these successive representations, questioning how the 7th art crafts and transforms our view of the Middle Ages. It is presented in an immersive experience organized around five spaces, set up in the historical rooms of the royal lodge and the dungeon. To enrich this visual and narrative journey, the Royal City of Loches presents a rare selection of original costumes and accessories from reference films, curated by major cinema institutions, including works from “Kaamelott” (TV series and films by Alexandre Astier), “Jeanne d’Arc” (Luc Besson, 1999), “Les Visiteurs” (Jean-Marie Poiré, 1993), and more.
