In Monaco on Monday, a conference titled “What future for France and the European Union?” was organized by the Monaco Mediterranean Foundation, where former Prime Minister of The Republicans party, Michel Barnier, who is also a former EU Commissioner and Brexit negotiator, granted an interview to Nice-Matin.

The occasion discussed the 2027 presidential election and the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the Southern Alps.

The European Union is currently facing successive crises that heavily impact the economy. The question arises, is Europe still sovereign today? It is essential for Europe to be cautious as the current crises reveal dependencies, especially in energy, security, and food, due to situations like the war in Iran and the conflicts initiated by Vladimir Putin against Ukraine. Europe needs to reduce these dependencies to regain autonomy, such as by cutting down or eliminating imports of Russian gas and oil and maintaining agricultural production.

Regarding military security, given the uncertainties around the United States, Europeans need to draw lessons from American indifference and sometimes aggression, particularly evident in Donald Trump’s statements. It is necessary to establish a true European defense pillar within NATO, emphasizing common efforts in decision-making, research, and military industrialization for greater autonomy.

In light of the upcoming 2027 presidential election and the Republicans party members’ support for Bruno Retailleau, Michel Barnier emphasizes the need for unity between the right and center-wing alliances. While remaining loyal to his political ideology, Barnier respects the party’s choices and awaits the selection of a single candidate to represent the Republican right and center.

Michel Barnier does not rule out candidacy in the future but emphasizes the importance of working towards unity rather than adding to the confusion of numerous candidates. His focus remains on fostering unity rather than personal candidacy.

Barnier’s proposals include advocating for a stronger France that reduces bureaucratic and fiscal burdens while reviving agricultural and industrial production. With significant national debts, bold steps are required to address deficits and promote national pride in French identity, culture, and traditions.

Michel Barnier reflects on the recent municipal elections in Nice, where Christian Estrosi was succeeded by Bruno Retailleau. Despite maintaining his support for Estrosi, Barnier stresses the importance of respecting the citizens’ choices and moving forward while holding onto core beliefs.

As a member of the executive board of the 2030 Olympic Games organizing committee, Barnier expresses concern over political disputes affecting the organization of events in Nice. However, he emphasizes the need to keep the Olympic Games above political controversies and hopes for a prompt resolution to ensure the success of this significant project.
