President Donald Trump’s overall and economic approval ratings dropped in the latest CNBC All-America Economic Survey. The survey of 1,000 people nationwide found that 40% approve of the president’s job performance, a 5-point drop from the last quarter. His net approval fell to -18, the lowest ever measured over the president’s two terms. Net approval by Democrats and independents hit record lows, but the decline from Republicans stood out, dropping 17 points to the lowest level since 2017.
Micah Roberts, partner at Public Opinion Strategies, stated that the numbers were not overly concerning to him, noting that amidst the war, higher inflation, and surging gas prices, a 5-point drop in approval is not significant. Roberts called the Iran war an “administration-defining” event for President Trump.
On the economy, Trump’s approval rating decreased sharply to 39%, with a net margin of -21, the lowest net approval during either of Trump’s terms. Most worrisome for the president and Republicans is the decline in both economic and overall presidential approval in GOP-held congressional districts, which dropped by 11 points to 43%.
Americans by a wide margin disapproved of Trump’s handling of the Iran war in the survey, with 48% feeling “less safe” due to the conflict. Majorities of Americans also said the war with Iran is not worth it when factoring in the financial cost, increase in gas prices, regime change in Iran, and casualties. Key parts of the constituency that elected President Trump in 2024 are deeply negative on the Iran war, while majority of Americans support disrupting Iran’s nuclear weapons development efforts.
Majorities of Americans have cut back on spending and plan to travel less in response to higher gas prices. Additionally, most disapprove of Trump’s handling of inflation and tariffs, while his efforts to deport illegal immigrants received modestly negative feedback.
(Note: The article discusses a survey showing a decline in President Trump’s approval ratings, particularly due to dissatisfaction with the Iran war, gas prices, and the economy. The survey also highlights divisions among different demographic groups and their views on the Iran war and Trump’s policies.)
