The municipal opposition in Agde is reforming after several resignations. New faces, a more political tone, and initial tensions surrounding the presidency of the urban district council suggest an animated term ahead.
Following Thierry Nadal, it was André Figueras and Jacques Heestermans who resigned this week from the opposition ranks. This shift has brought Marie-Josée Auge-Caumon and Yannick Maillot back to the municipal council.
Sébastien Escalier, a new face in the opposition
On Wednesday evening, in the hemicycle, another minority elected official, Sébastien Escalier, spoke on behalf of the “100% Agde” group. This marks the emergence of several new faces and likely a more politicized opposition against the majority National Rally, time will tell. During an oral question at the beginning of the session, Sébastien Escalier outlined the action plan of his group.
“We will not be an opposition of posture, reflex, or resentment,” he assured. “When a decision is in the right direction, we will support it without hesitation. But when it is necessary to alert, question, demand accountability, reject opacity, and fight against renunciation, we will do so with firmness.”
The presidency of the urban district at the heart of the debate
Once the framework was established, the debate shifted to the presidency of the urban district. It is known that it will not be held by the mayor of the central city, Aurélien Lopez Liguori, but by Gwendoline Chaudoir, the mayor of Portiragnes.
“You criticize me, in a way, for not being the president of the urban district community, even though three of your community elected officials did not wish to support my candidacy if I had presented it,” retorted Aurélien Lopez Liguori. “You even went so far as to morally sanction the only community elected official in your group who expressed their intention to support me” (André Figueras according to our information). “Your motivation is not to build a better future for our city together. What interests you is the militant fight against a political party. And that is precisely what drove away your fellow candidates, guilty of preferring to love their city rather than hate a party.”
A first skirmish in tapas, which likely sets the tone for future exchanges. All in fair play.
