STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl, developed by GSC Game World and released in 2024, went through a long development process. Initially planned for an earlier release, the game was indefinitely postponed due to funding problems and numerous changes in personnel within the studio. In 2018, GSC Game World unveiled the first teaser for STALKER 2, and after several delays, including the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, which also influenced the development, the game finally came out on November 20, 2024.

As you know, STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl will welcome a new DLC this summer, Cost of Hope, announced during the Xbox Partner Preview last month. Recently, GSC Game Studio also released an update, Sealed Truth, which, in addition to bug fixes, connects with the upcoming expansion by introducing a new series of quests centered on the mysterious X-18 laboratory. At the BAFTA Games Awards 2026 (results available here), Insider Gaming interviewed Ievgen Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World and co-director of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl. He commented on the game’s nomination in the “Beyond Entertainment” category with a rather serious response:

“In our region of the world, this game is closely linked to our war. As a team, we are fully involved in everything that happens. For us, this project transcends mere entertainment. It is an essential means of sending a message to the entire world.”

At the same time, GSC Game World’s creative director, Maria Grygorovych, spoke about the impact of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl on Ukrainian culture. You can read her statement below:

“We have already achieved our goal, as one of the most important was to give the player the opportunity to love Ukrainian culture.”

We truly believe that Ukrainian culture deserves to be loved. When we see people from all over the world listening to Ukrainian music or starting to show interest in the language, literature, or philosophy of the game, it already proves that we have accomplished something important, at least to us and to achieve our artistic goals.

The next STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl DLC, titled Cost of Hope, will be released this summer on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The exact release date is still unknown.
