The truth is elsewhere – Based in Toulouse and attached to the French space agency, Geipan investigates about a thousand UFO cases per year – observed by citizens – in an attempt to explain them in a rational manner
When we think of UFOs, we often think of the United States. From Roswell to Area 51, American society and culture are steeped in stories of unidentified flying objects, a source of many fantasies. France is not exempt from these phenomena. What is less known is that they are taken very seriously and are the subject of rigorous investigations, which in most cases lead to a perfectly rational explanation. Behind these investigations, there is a service attached to Cnes, the French space agency: Geipan, for Group for the Study and Information on Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena, based in Toulouse.
Comprising three employees and twelve volunteers spread across the country, it has an essential role: “To collect, study, and investigate strange observation cases reported by citizens in order to attempt to provide an answer to what they have seen, relying on a technical and scientific approach,” summarizes Frédéric Courtade, head of Geipan.
It all starts with reports from witnesses of curious phenomena. Among them are strange lights in the sky, orange triangles moving, white shapes fading gradually, objects with an unusual trajectory or movement… These observations are reported via forms filled out directly on the service’s website or by mail, as well as statements taken by the gendarmes according to certain(…)
