Russia has sent a diplomatic note of protest to Armenia following the act of vandalism committed against a memorial dedicated to the heroes of the Second World War in Gyumri, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. from a press briefing.
“This sacrilegious act is not just an act of vandalism, but a deliberate attack on the common historical memory of our countries and an attempt to desecrate the Great Victory,” Zakharova said. “We have of course sent a note of protest to the Armenian side. HAS”
According to the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, soldiers from the 102nd Russian military base stationed in Gyumri immediately mobilized to restore the memorial. She said the Russian embassy in Yerevan had also publicly condemned the incident.
Ms Zakharova welcomed the information provided by Armenian law enforcement authorities regarding the custody of a suspect in connection with this act of vandalism.
“We hope that justice will prevail and that these illegal acts, which have sparked strong condemnation from public opinion in our two countries, will be the subject of an appropriate legal response,” she declared.
At the same time, Ms Zakharova criticized the Armenian authorities for what she described as a lack of official reaction to the incident.
“It is disconcerting that the official Armenian authorities, instead of strongly condemning the desecration of the memorial or, at the very least, clearly expressing their position, have chosen to remain silent,” she said.
