The French presidency of the G7 does not hide its concern about the record Chinese trade surplus and the extreme dependence of the seven advanced economies (Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan and United Kingdom) on Chinese supply chains for minerals critical, rare earths and certain strategic components.Â

They also noted that China was a formidable competitor in artificial intelligence. In addition, on a number of issues such as the climate, Beijing has become essential.

“Until now, the G7 was rather a forum for taking strong and firm positions towards China, including on more specific issues such as Taiwan”underlines Marc Julienne, director of the Ifri Asia Center. Today, G7 members seek a delicate balance between cooperation and rivalry.
