A retiree discovered a squatter hiding in the attic of her house. For months, she thought she heard an animal scratching under her roof. But the man was dislodged after the septuagenarian ended up suspecting something.
“I started hearing noises in the roof.” This story is hard to believe… For several months, an Australian retiree believed that strange noises coming from the ceiling of her house were caused by a wild animal. “At first I thought it was a possum,” she told 7 News. Late last year, the septuagenarian, who lives in Adelaide, began to hear scratching and moving noises above her head. Convinced that an opossum has settled in the roof, she is not overly worried. Some details, however, concern her: objects regularly disappear and she sometimes notices that the toilet bowl has been raised or that the toilet has not been flushed.
“I was too panicked”
Thinking of simple oversights, she does not immediately make the connection. But the situation takes a turn when one morning, a violent noise resounds in the ceiling. The retiree then hears someone swearing, as if after a fall. Terrified, she did not intervene but ended up calling the police, who immediately decided to inspect the attic. “I was too panicked to call the police because I thought if I made any noise, whoever was up there would come down.”
By searching the attic, the agents discovered that a squatter had set up a basic living space there. Traces of his passage were found, in particular food packaging and evidence showing that he helped himself from the occupant’s refrigerator.

The retiree criticizes her landlord for not having taken her alerts seriously. The organization assures for its part that it has carried out the necessary checks.
