The United Kingdom was once again the leading source market, with nearly 1.7 million visitors in April, 2.7% more than a year earlier. France ranked second, with around 1.3 million tourists (+5.1%), while Germany recorded a drop of 9.1%, to 1.2 million travelers.
Catalonia once again became the main destination for international tourists in April, accounting for 20.8% of all arrivals. Andalusia and the Valencian Community followed, also recording a large influx of foreign visitors.
With this result, Spain totals 26.5 million international visitors between January and Aprilor 3.4% more than over the same period of 2025, according to data published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This figure keeps the sector on a trajectory compatible with the symbolic threshold of 100 million tourists per yeara bar that still seemed difficult to reach in 2026 just a few months ago.
April marks a turning point
Tourism started the year showing signs of slowing down. But growth accelerated as the spring progressed. The increase in arrivals in April constitutes the strongest year-on-year increase recorded in the last 12 months and confirms the solidity of international demand for Spain.
Analysts put forward several factors to explain this evolution, including the resumption of long-distance travelparticularly from the American continent, the rebound in professional travel and the search for destinations considered stable in an international context marked by geopolitical uncertainty.
In this context, several industry experts believe that the conflict in the Middle East could encourage a redistribution of tourist flows towards destinations perceived as safer, including Spain and other Western European countries.
Even if it is difficult to precisely measure the impact of this phenomenon, the acceleration observed in March and April coincides with a rise in travelers from long-distance markets and with a resumption of business travel. For the sector, this combination of factors helps explain why tourism growth has strengthened after a more moderate start to the year.
The trend in arrivals reinforces the possibility that Spain once again ends the year with record figures. The sector, however, insists that the objective is not limited to increasing the number of visitors, but also to improving profitability and attracting travelers with higher spending capacity.
If the current trend continues during the high summer season, Spain could approach the symbolic mark of 100 million tourists international destinations in a single year, an unprecedented milestone for the national tourism sector. The evolution of reservations and demand over the coming months will be decisive in knowing whether this objective ultimately comes to fruition.
