In Türkiye, the opposition in the middle of a crisis: “It’s worse than if they had closed the party”

Panic continues to blow through the ranks of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition party in Türkiye. On May 21, a court decision canceled the 2023 internal primary that brought Özgür Özel at its head and reinstated his defeated rival, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu. Three days later, riot police forcibly stormed the CHP headquarters in Ankara, using tear gas and beating party members before evicting them from the premises.

Kemal Kilidaroglu, a character devoid of charisma, is criticized for his multiple electoral failures against the Islamo-nationalist president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On May 30, he appeared on social networks, returning to his office at party headquarters. From now on, he and his supporters want to obtain the dismissal of Özgür Özel from his functions as president of the opposition parliamentary group, reports the daily Sözcü.
