Five people were injured in a series of stabbings that occurred Sunday evening at Penn Station, New York’s main train station, emergency services said.
“The alleged perpetrator has been apprehended,” said the New York firefighters. According to an initial assessment, one victim is in serious condition, two others were moderately injured and two suffer from minor injuries. All were taken to hospital.
Following the attack, authorities asked the public to avoid the area while investigators continue their investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the attack.
Located in the heart of Manhattan, Penn Station welcomes nearly 600,000 travelers daily. The station is close to Madison Square Garden, where American President Donald Trump is due to attend an NBA finals game on Monday.
The incident also comes a few days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Penn Station is one of the main access points to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which will host eight matches of the tournament, including the final scheduled for July 19.
Authorities have not yet released information on the motive for the attack or the identity of the suspect.
