Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar ordered the installation of the Palestinian flag on the facade of the presidential palace after its withdrawal from Parliament by the new pro-Israeli government led by Janez Janá.
In a message published on social networks, the head of state reaffirmed her accusation of “genocide” against Israel and declared that “the genocide against the Palestinians has not ended”. She said the flag would remain raised for a week before being displayed inside the palace as a symbol of “serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights.”
This initiative comes in a context of deep disagreement between the presidency and the new Slovenian government. The former Prime Minister, Robert Golob, had adopted a very critical line towards Israel, going so far as to recognize a Palestinian state in 2024.
Conversely, Janez Janá, close to American President Donald Trump and an outspoken supporter of Israel, has initiated a rapprochement with Jerusalem. Shortly after taking office, Israel announced the upcoming opening of its first embassy in Slovenia.
Janez Janša has also indicated in the past that he wanted to transfer the Slovenian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and reverse recognition of the Palestinian state, opening the way to an increasingly visible political confrontation between the presidency and the government on the issue Israeli-Palestinian.
