Turkiye to host 10th trilateral meeting of foreign ministers with Azerbaijan and Georgia

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will host the 10th trilateral meeting of foreign ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia on Monday in Istanbul, diplomatic sources said on Sunday.

The meeting will bring together Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Maka Botchorishvili.

The ministers are expected to review the current state of cooperation between the three countries and explore areas for future collaboration.

Among the topics expected to be discussed are “regional developments, foreign policy issues and cooperation in the South Caucasus”, as well as “transport, connectivity and strengthening of regional transit networks” and ” energy security, trade and deepening economic cooperation.

According to the sources, Hakan Fidan is expected to highlight the growing strategic importance of the South Caucasus in a context marked by increasing geopolitical uncertainty, economic vulnerability and security challenges.

The same sources indicated that he will highlight the fact that the trilateral cooperation mechanism constitutes an effective and results-oriented platform, contributing to regional stability and prosperity.

The Turkish Foreign Minister is also expected to emphasize that Turkiye’s comprehensive relations with Azerbaijan and Georgia play a key role in strengthening regional stability and economic integration.

Hakan Fidan is expected to draw attention to the growing importance of the Middle Corridor in strengthening connectivity between Europe and Asia, particularly in light of changes in global supply chains, energy security concerns and evolving trends geoeconomics.

In this regard, it should note that strengthening transport initiatives along the Middle Corridor, particularly the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line, expanding logistics networks and increasing transport capacities remain common priorities.

According to the sources, Hakan Fidan will also highlight that the strategic energy projects have made important contributions not only to the three countries, but also to the energy security of the entire region.

It is expected to emphasize the need to further strengthen cooperation in existing projects related to energy and sustainable connectivity, as well as coordination in these areas.

Hakan Fidan is also expected to reiterate that establishing lasting peace, stability and normalization in the South Caucasus is of strategic importance to promote regional prosperity.

He will emphasize that the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to pose risks to the South Caucasus, the Black Sea region and neighboring areas.

The minister is expected to call for continued support for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict with a just and lasting peace as soon as possible.

The trilateral meetings of foreign ministers of Turkiye, Azerbaijan and Georgia were launched in order to institutionalize political dialogue between the three countries and deepen regional cooperation.

The first meeting was held in Trabzon on June 8, 2012, while the last one took place in Baku on March 15, 2024.

The mechanism focuses on issues of common interest, including foreign policy, regional developments, transport, connectivity, energy security, trade, economic relations and regional infrastructure projects.

Situated along a strategic corridor linking Europe and Asia, Turkiye, Azerbaijan and Georgia cooperate closely on major connectivity and energy initiatives.

The main pillars of this partnership include the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line, the Middle Corridor, projects aimed at strengthening regional logistics networks and strategic cooperation in the energy sector.

Operating continuously for almost 14 years, the Turkiye-Azerbaijan-Georgia trilateral mechanism has become a concrete expression of the three countries’ common commitment to promoting stability, economic integration and prosperity across the South Caucasus.
