Israel raises its flag on Beaufort Fortress, Lebanon

Continuing its advance further north into Lebanese territory, the IDF took control of a citadel that it had occupied from 1984 to the year 2000.

The Israeli flags and those of the Golani infantry brigade have been flying again since Sunday on the walls of the Beaufort Fortress. This image has a highly symbolic value. This site, an old fortified castle rebuilt in the 13thecentury by the crusaders from the West, was occupied in 1984, for 15 years, by the Israeli army during the previous war in Lebanon, before the withdrawal of the Tsahal in the year 2000. The ruined building is located on a ridge at 670 meters above sea level overlooking the Litani River.

Benyamin Netanyahu, in a video, welcomed this operation which he described as « d’étape spectaculaire » or even « tournant décisif ». The fortress stands in an ideal site for firing rockets and drones into northern Israel.
