A man suspected of belonging to a Hamas network in Europe was arrested in Denmark as part of a German investigation into a planned attack on Jewish and Israeli sites.
The suspect, identified as Yousif C., is the eighth man arrested in this case. He was arrested near Copenhagen by the Danish police, after an arrest warrant was issued by the German federal prosecutor’s office.
According to German prosecutors, Yousif C. provided five pistols and ammunition to another suspected member of the network, Abdel al-G., in July. The latter, arrested on October 1, then allegedly handed over the weapons to Mohammed A., a British citizen arrested in London in November.
According to investigators, Mohammed A. was to transport and store the weapons in Austria. The newspaper Die Welt claims that he is the son of Hamas official Bassem Naim.
The investigation has already led to the discovery of an arms cache in Vienna. The Austrian services announced in November that they had found five pistols and ten magazines in a rented storage unit, hidden in a suitcase.
The authorities suspect this network of having prepared attacks against Israeli or Jewish institutions in Europe.
Several other arrests have taken place in recent months in Germany, Cyprus, the United Kingdom and Denmark. Investigators cite a structured network involving suspects of Lebanese, Danish, British and German origin, with transfers of arms and ammunition between several European countries.
