While Romania is in the midst of a political crisis and awaiting a new Prime Minister, the reasons for the turmoil are to be found in the economy. Faced with a major budget deficit, the largest in the European Union, and excessively high inflation (11%), the government has implemented an austerity policy which seriously penalizes citizens and their purchasing power.
