A naive initiative? A joke in bad taste? A student enrolled in a high school in Modena (Emilia-Romagna) arrived in history class with a vestige of the past. He took the object out of his backpack and presented it to his teacher, whose blood boiled: terrified, the teacher alerted the director of the establishment, who immediately contacted the emergency services.

The cause of this uproar? The famous relic brought by the student was a mortar shell in very good condition, probably dating from the First World War, explains the “Corriere della Sera”. The carabinieri arrived in a hurry and ordered the students to stay in class. The shell was transported to the high school courtyard and the perimeter sealed off. Minesweepers were called, but their intervention was canceled as it was deemed unnecessary. As a precautionary measure, the establishment was finally evacuated and classes suspended.
The carabinieri seized the object for the purposes of the investigation. The student who brought the famous projectile risks having a tough time: “We are certain that it was not a joke, but an act of naivety which, however, will result in disciplinary sanctions. The actions of this student caused the evacuation of the establishment and the suspension of classes,” reacted Luigi Vaccari, the director of the high school.
