Amnesty International denounces the death of 150 Fulani in a military camp in Nigeria

In a press release published on April 30, Amnesty International denounced the arbitrary detention of 1,500 Fulani herders (also called Fulanis in Nigeria) for more than three months in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp, under the responsibility of the Nigerian army, in Kwara State, in the west-central part of the country.

According to information collected by the human rights organization, at least 150 people, including many children, died due to detention conditions: “overpopulation, unsanitary conditions, travel restrictions, acute malnutrition and diseasesâ€. At least a hundred pregnant women present in the camp are also said to be faced with insufficient maternal care. The NGO urged the Nigerian authorities to open an investigation.
