The truce in the Middle East is more weakened than ever. Attacks and strikes are increasing between Iran and Israel for the first time since the ceasefire, theoretically in force since April 8. According to Israel, Tehran fired “nearly 30 missiles” at the country.

After two months of respite, alarm sirens woke up Israelis this morning. A total of 30 missiles were fired by Iran in a few hours. Explosions were heard in the sky after the interception by Israeli anti-aircraft defenses. And projectiles fell in the open countryside, as in the West Bank. Israel is once again in a state of emergency. Even if its cafes remain open for the moment, the inhabitants of Tel Aviv have a feeling of deja -vu.
“It’s a little stressful to know that, perhaps, the war will start again”comments a cafe owner. “We stay close to the shelters wherever we are, but we are resilient, we are used to it”confides a local resident. “It’s like that, all we want is for there to be no more war and for it to stop”adds a young woman. In the meantime, Israeli hospitals are preparing for the worst, transferring patients to basements. Schools are closed but Ben Gurion airport remains operational, with reduced air traffic for the moment.
Why this return of hostilities? Iran fired its first missiles Sunday evening towards northern Israel with this justification: “We had already warned that if the crimes already committed in the suburbs of Beirut spread, we would attack.” While missiles had just been fired from Iran, the regime and its supporters celebrated Sunday evening what they consider to be revenge, after the Israeli bombings in the Lebanese capital against Hezbollah, an ally of the Islamic Republic.
The Jewish state responded with massive bombings, notably on a petrochemical site in Mahshar (Islamic Republic of Iran). On the 101st day of war, the international community calls on both parties for a return to the ceasefire.
