New nightmare for Lando Norris: abandonment in Monaco, the defense of his title turns into disaster

Lando Norris once again saw his race end prematurely in Monaco. The McLaren driver was the victim of a new problem linked to his battery, further aggravating an already very complicated start to the season.

The 2026 F1 season continues to turn into a nightmare for Lando Norris. Already in great difficulty in the championship, the Briton suffered another retirement during the Monaco Grand Prix after only 46 of the 78 scheduled laps.

The McLaren driver was forced to park his car due to a problem with the battery of his MCL40. A breakdown which is not insignificant since it is the second incident of the same type encountered by Norris during the Monaco weekend.

For the reigning world champion, this new disillusionment represents a very hard blow in a campaign which seems to be slipping away from him more and more.

A title defense that collapses

Mechanical problems have been accumulating since the start of the year for Norris. This new abandonment already constitutes its second consecutive non-finish caused by problems linked to the powertrain.

The Briton had already not seen the arrival of the Canadian Grand Prix. Earlier in the season, he was unable to even start the event in China due to an electrical fault.

These repeated setbacks have direct consequences on the F1 championship ranking. After only five rounds, Norris has only 58 points, a total far removed from that of leader Kimi Antonelli.

The young Mercedes driver, author of pole position in Monaco, already had 131 units even before the finish of the Monegasque event and seemed able to further increase his lead.

McLaren suffers technical problems

However, the Monaco weekend got off to a bad start for Norris. From the free practice sessions on Friday, his McLaren had already shown worrying signs of fragility.

During the second practice session, a breakdown on his MCL40 brought him to a premature halt, causing him to lose valuable driving time on a circuit where every lap counts to build his confidence.

This new failure in the race confirms a worrying trend for the British driver. Between electrical problems, battery problems and powertrain failures, Norris seems to be the favored target for mechanical problems since the start of the season.

A championship that is moving away

While McLaren hoped to defend the world crown acquired in 2025, the situation is becoming more and more critical for its star driver.

With only 58 points scored in five races and several retirements already recorded, Norris sees his direct rivals taking off. In such a competitive championship, each missed race or each abandonment weighs heavily in the balance.

To hope to restart its season, McLaren will have to quickly resolve these reliability problems which are weighing down the performance of its world champion. Without a quick reaction from the Woking team, Norris’s title ambitions could well disappear before even mid-season.

The Monaco Grand Prix will in any case remain like a new dark episode in a 2026 campaign which, so far, looks more like a way of the cross than a title defense.
