Despite the ceasefire, strikes near the Lebanese capital resume. Israel carried out strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, stronghold of Hezbollah, a movement allied to Iran, on Sunday June 7.
“The army is currently carrying out a strike against terrorist command centers in the Dahieh district of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah fire towards Israeli territory”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced in a joint statement.
Two apartments in the Tahouitat al-Ghadir district were targeted, according to the official Lebanese agency ANI. Earlier on Sunday, the Israeli army indicated that two projectiles had been fired from Lebanon towards Israeli territory, and had been intercepted.
A new ceasefire agreement was announced on Wednesday at the end of a fourth session of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, a previous truce announced on April 17 having never been respected. This agreement, rejected by Hezbollah, provides for a ceasefire conditional on a “arrêt complet” fire from the Shiite group supported by Iran, while allowing continued shooting and operations by the Israeli army in southern Lebanon.
Israeli strikes on Lebanon have left more than 3,560 dead since the start of the war on March 2, according to the authorities’ latest report. On the Israeli side, 29 soldiers and a civilian contractor were killed in Lebanon, according to the army.
