BRITISH IN IRAN

A British couple imprisoned in Iran, after being arrested in early 2025 during a motorcycle tour of the world, had their appeal rejected, their son announced. “It now appears that their appeal against this ten-year prison sentence for espionage has been rejected,” their son, Joe Bennett, said in a statement.

Lindsay Foreman and her husband, Craig Foreman, were sentenced in February to 10 years in prison for espionage, a charge they deny. The case is now before the Supreme Court, Mr. Bennett said, “but we do not know the procedure, the timetable and the elements that will eventually be filed on their behalf.”

Both began a hunger strike. Craig is on his 25th day and Lindsay is on her 16th day, according to their family. The couple traveled to Iran after ignoring warnings from their loved ones and the British Foreign Office, which advises against travel to the country. They are the latest in a long list of Westerners detained by Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

MOJTABA KHAMENEI ALIVE AND INVOLVED?

The United States believes that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is “alive” and “increasingly involved” in the direction of the country, declared the head of American diplomacy, while negotiations to end the war stall.

“I think there are signs that show that he is becoming more and more involved at a certain level, even if all his communications have been in writing and through third parties,” Marco Rubio told the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

HEZBOLLAH

Hezbollah will not accept a “partial ceasefire” with Israel, a senior official of the pro-Iranian group told AFP, threatening a response from the movement in the event of an Israeli attack on Beirut and its suburbs.

“We will not accept any partial ceasefire agreement,” assured Mahmoud Qomati in a written statement. “The Zionist enemy must know that any aggression against the suburbs can lead to a stronger response” from Hezbollah.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Tuesday that the United States had validated the principle according to which Israel would strike the southern suburbs of the capital, a stronghold of Hezbollah, if the latter targets its territory.

“RÉGIME DE TERREUR”

Benjamin Netanyahu, affirmed that Israel would work to put an end to the Iranian “regime of terror”, in a video released by his office. FUNÉRAILLES OF KHAMENEI

Iran is planning a three-day national funeral, on a date yet to be determined, for Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, killed by Israeli-American strikes on the first day of the war on February 28.

A national funeral initially planned for March 4 was postponed due to the war. “A three-day public funeral is planned,” declared a deputy mayor of Tehran, Mohammad-Amin Tavakolizadeh, quoted by state television. No date was specified but the official mentioned the period around the month of muharram, the first month of the Muslim calendar, i.e. mid-June.

A LEBANESE UNIVERSITY POSTPONES ITS EXAMS

The Lebanese University announced on Tuesday that it was postponing tests in the south and southern suburbs of Beirut the day after the death of a student, her father and her brother, targeted by an Israeli strike on their return from an exam session. In a press release on X, the country’s only public university, deplored the death of “student Theodossia James Karam and her brother Tony.”

It announced its decision to postpone exams for a week on its main campus, in the southern suburbs of Beirut, stronghold of pro-Iranian Hezbollah, as well as in the southern city of Saida. The institution, “which lost a large number of its students, teachers and employees during the Israeli aggression, affirms that the security of the university community remains the highest priority”, specifies its press release. ISRAEL SAYS HAVING OBTAINED FROM WASHINGTON IN LEBANON

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz affirmed that his country had obtained approval from the United States to strike the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, in the event of an attack by the pro-Iranian group on its soil, according to a press release from his office.

“The Prime Minister and I led, with the Israeli army, a process aimed at establishing an equation according to which the fate of Dahiyeh (the southern suburbs, editor’s note) in Beirut would be linked to that of the localities in the north of Israel. If the “Israeli localities continue to be attacked, we will evacuate and strike the Shiite district of Dahiyeh in Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah,” he declared.

“The United States has validated this principle and communicated it to the Lebanese government as well as to all parties concerned (…) Either the shooting against the localities stops, or, if it continues, we will strike Dahiyeh in Beirut”, continued the minister.

A FAMILY DECIMATED BY A STRIKE IN SOUTHERN LEBANON

Three members of the same family were killed by an Israeli drone Monday afternoon, reports the Lebanese daily L’Orient-Le Jour (nouvelle fenêtre). According to him, Théodossia Karam, 20, her little brother Tony, 12, and their father James died in an attack on their car, while they were traveling to their village of Qalayaa, near Nabatyié. All three had gone the same morning to Beirut, where the young woman, a science student, was to take her end-of-year exams, the community priest told the newspaper.

“A dentist from the village of Qlayaa (…) was killed with his son and daughter” when an Israeli drone “targeted their car” on a road in southern Lebanon, said the National Information Agency (Ani, official). “We are devastated and do not understand why this man was targeted with his children,” Father Antonios Farah, parish priest of their parish, told AFP.

The Christian village of Qlayaa, bordering Israel, is caught in the crossfire of Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah but some of its inhabitants have chosen to stay despite the advance of the Israeli army.

APPEL À ÉVACUATIONS À NABATIYÉ

Israeli forces have called on the Lebanese population to evacuate the town of Nabatiyé, ahead of planned attacks against pro-Iranian Hezbollah, despite the current truce. The latter “having violated the ceasefire agreement, the Israeli army is forced to intervene”, affirmed Avichay Adraee, an Arabic-speaking military spokesperson, urging the inhabitants of this locality in southern Lebanon to leave their homes.

TENSION GROWS BETWEEN TRUMP AND NETANYAHOU

While peace talks with Iran are still unsuccessful, Donald Trump is annoyed to see his Israeli ally Benjamin Netanyahu intensifying his strikes in Lebanon. HEZBOLLAH READY TO RESPECT A CEASEFIRE?

The President of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri, who plays an intermediary role between Hezbollah and the United States, will guarantee the adhesion of the pro-Iranian formation to a “comprehensive ceasefire” with Israel if such an agreement is found, declared his advisor Ali Hamdan to AFP on Tuesday.

“President Berri’s main demand is a comprehensive ceasefire. If a comprehensive ceasefire agreement is obtained, it guarantees compliance by Hezbollah,” he said. Nabih Berri is the leader of the Shiite Amal movement, an ally of Hezbollah, which does not maintain direct contacts with the United States.

His advisor specified that “the global ceasefire means the cessation of air strikes, from land or from the sea, and that there be no dynamiting or demolition” in southern Lebanon, where Israel is accused of razing entire localities.

SIX DEAD IN STRIKE ON HOUSE

The Lebanese Civil Defense announced that it had removed the bodies of six people from the rubble of a house targeted the evening before by an Israeli strike in a village in the south. In a press release, she said that rescuers were able to “extract six bodies from the rubble, as well as three injured people”, in the village of Marwaniyé, near Saida.

The National Information Agency reported Monday evening a strike on the village, targeted like 15 others by an Israeli evacuation order early in the morning.

THE IRANIAN REGIME WILL “ENDUALLY COLLAPSE”

In Israel, a ceremony was organized on Monday for the departure of the current head of Mossad, the Israeli foreign secret service, David Bernea. On this occasion, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked him for “these 30 years of dedicated service”, and in particular “these recent years, which have been marked by remarkable successes and achievements in the service of security of Israel” according to him.

The leader also believed that “the price that Iran has already paid is very heavy”, he indicated on his account (nouvelle fenêtre). “The foundations of this regime of terror in Iran have cracked. It will no longer become what it was, and I tell you: it will end up collapsing,” he said.

“MUTUAL CESSATION OF ATTACKS”

The Lebanese embassy in Washington announced that Hezbollah had accepted an American proposal for a “mutual cessation of attacks”. “Israeli strikes on Dahiyeh (the southern suburbs of Beirut, editor’s note) would cease in exchange for Hezbollah’s commitment to refrain from launching attacks against Israel, with the framework of the ceasefire to be expanded to cover the entire Lebanese territory,” the embassy said on Facebook.

AN “INEVITABLE” RESUMPTION OF THE CONFLICT

A resumption of the war against the United States is “inevitable”, a senior Iranian military official said on Tuesday, at a time when discussions between Tehran and Washington to put a lasting end to hostilities in the Middle East seem to be stalling.

“The United States demands our total surrender and the Iranian nation will never capitulate,” said a deputy of the Khatam al-Anbiya joint command, Mohammad Jafar Assadi. “Without capitulation, war is inevitable. So we wait and war does not scare us,” he added, according to comments reported by state television (Irib).

ISRAELI OFFENSIVE WEAPONS BANNED AT EUROSATORY

France has banned the presentation of Israeli offensive weapons at the 2026 edition of the Eurosatory exhibition, dedicated to defense, which takes place from June 15 to 19 near Paris, organizers told AFP on Monday. Only defensive weapons can be presented, as in previous editions.

“We recognize Israel’s right, as with any state, to defend itself against the attacks of which it is a victim,” explained Jean-Noël Barrot. “However, in full consistency with the decisions we have taken in the past, we have indicated to the organizers of this show that only defensive equipment could be exhibited.”

“A DEAL IS WITHIN REACH”

On the aspect of negotiations between Washington and Tehran, Jean-Noël Barrot estimated that “an agreement is within reach”, and that the two camps “must now do everything to conclude it”. “The situation is unbearable, it only produces losers, (…) starting with Iran and the United States, and up to us: we are suffering the full brunt of this war that we did not choose,” he insisted on France 2, calling for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

FRANCE “THE FIRST ALONGSIDE THE LEBANESE PEOPLE”

Jean-Noel Barrot also rejected any criticism of a “supposed inaction by France” in Lebanon, recalling that Paris had demanded the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council which was held on Monday. France was “the first alongside the Lebanese people and the Lebanese authorities” in this conflict, via “emergency humanitarian aid” and “military support with around forty armored vehicles” sent to Lebanon, he assured.

“Those who today denounce France’s inaction insult the memory of the French peacekeepers” killed since the start of the conflict, Warrant Officer Florian Montorio and Sergeant Anicet Girardin, “who gave their lives within the French contingent of UNIFIL”, soldiers who “contribute to lowering the pressure” in the area, said the minister.

“NOTHING CAN JUSTIFY” PROLONGED ISRAELI OCCUPATION

“We recognize Israel’s right to self-defense, including in the face of unacceptable attacks by Hezbollah”, but “nothing can justify the continuation of military operations and the prolonged occupation of Israel in the depths of Lebanese territory”, said the head of French diplomacy.

“There is no question that Lebanon is in some way an expiatory victim of an agreement which is struggling to be concluded between Iran and the United States,” further underlined Jean-Noël Barrot on France 2, who said he spoke Monday evening with his American counterpart Marco Rubio. He pleaded for negotiations between Israel and Lebanon to continue “under the best conditions”, which “could not have been the case” if strikes had been carried out on Beirut.

“IN DIRECT CONFRONTATION WITH THE ENEMY”

The head of Parliament and main Iranian negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, indicated that he had spoken with his “brother” Nabih Berri, the president of the Lebanese Parliament and ally of Hezbollah. He threatened Israel with reprisals if its offensives continue in Lebanon. “I asserted that if the Israeli aggression against Lebanon continued, not only would we suspend the negotiation process, but we would find ourselves in direct confrontation with the enemy,” he warned.

“Long live the resistance. Long live the defense of the homeland. And long live the brotherhood between the Lebanese and Iranian people,” said the Iranian official.

HOSPITAL BUILDING DESTROYED IN TYR

A hospital in Tyre, southern Lebanon, was significantly damaged by an Israeli strike on Monday. It targeted an intersection near the Jabal Amel hospital “hitting a building and a parking lot”, said the National Information Agency, the official Lebanese agency. Two deaths were reported, while hostilities continued into the night, despite announcements from Donald Trump indicating appeasement.

ISRAELI SOLDIER KILLED IN SOUTHERN LEBANON

The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced on X the death of an Israeli soldier, Captain Ori Yosef Silvester, aged 30. This military doctor “fell in combat in southern Lebanon”, he wrote on X. “It is with deep sadness that we learned” of his death, responded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, referring to a “painful incident”.

THE BROKEN INDIRECT DIALOGUE BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND TEHRAN?

Accusing Israel of crossing “red lines”, and while negotiations are slipping to end the war in the Middle East, Iran has for its part threatened to open “new fronts”, despite the truce in force since April 8. Tehran said it would condition any agreement to end the war in the Middle East on a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Donald Trump assured him on his platform that “discussions continued at a rapid pace with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” An assertion contradicting that of the Iranian press agency Tasnim, according to which Tehran has broken off indirect dialogue with Washington, in particular because of the Israeli offensive in Lebanon. However, this information has not been officially confirmed.

THE UN PROPOSAL

In a report to the Security Council, seen by AFP, UN Secretary General António Guterres recommended Monday to maintain UN troops in Lebanon after the departure at the end of 2026 of the current peacekeeping force, decided in August. Among the objectives: monitoring the ceasefire and supporting the Lebanese armed forces. An option which, however, risks encountering opposition from the United States and Israel.

“NO CALM”

“If there is no calm in northern Israel, there will be no calm for Hezbollah,” said the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, on X Monday evening, after having participated in an emergency meeting of the Security Council called by the France.

NEW CYCLE OF ISRAEL-LEBANON NEGOTIATIONS

While Israel and Hezbollah continued to clash overnight, a new round of negotiations between the Lebanese and Israelis is planned for this Tuesday and Wednesday in Washington. Discussions to which the Lebanese pro-Iranian movement is opposed. This is the fourth cycle since the war broke out in early March, between emissaries from the two countries, which do not maintain diplomatic relations.

These negotiations are “the only way to end the war”, launched Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday, denouncing a “ferocious aggression” by Israel, which is intensifying its offensive against the movement supported by Iran.

TENSIONS BETWEEN TRUMP AND NETANYAHOU

According to the American media Axios, Donald Trump described Benjamin Netanyahu as “completely crazy” and accused him of endangering peace negotiations with Iran during a telephone conversation.

TRUMP PUT THE PRESSURE

Donald Trump on Monday evening urged Israel and Hezbollah to stop fighting “forever” after the American president assured that both parties had promised him appeasement.

He said on his Truth Social network that Hezbollah had “agreed to stop shooting at Israel and its soldiers. Likewise, Israel agreed to stop shooting at them. Let’s see how long this lasts – let’s hope it’s FOREVER!”

Lebanon, too, announced that Hezbollah had accepted an American proposal for a “mutual cessation of attacks” (nouvelle fenêtre). Statements with little effect on the ground with continued clashes into the night.

CLASHES IN ISRAEL AND HEZBOLLAH

Israel and Hezbollah continued their clashes last night despite Donald Trump’s announcement of the agreement of the two camps to cease hostilities before a new round of negotiations between the Lebanese and Israelis on Tuesday in Washington.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on an Israeli tank early this Tuesday in Hadatha, in southern Lebanon, assuring on Telegram to fight against “the advance of Israeli forces”. Also on Monday evening, fighters targeted four tanks and Israeli soldiers, he said.

The Israeli army reported the interception early Tuesday of two projectiles coming from Lebanon, without reporting any injuries. And according to the official Lebanese Ani Agency, Israeli strikes targeted the villages of Marwaniyeh, Sidiqine, Yater and Mansouri in the south during the night. And a “very violent explosion” was heard in Debbine.

The statements remain contradictory. Donald Trump assured, Monday June 1, that negotiations with Tehran to end the war in the Middle East were continuing “at a rapid pace” and that a detente was looming in Lebanon, as demanded by the Iranian side.

Earlier, Iran’s Tasnim news agency said the country’s negotiators had “suspended” indirect dialogue with Washington because of “crimes” that Israel “continue to commit”without this information being confirmed by an official Iranian source.

“The United States is directly responsible for a violation of the ceasefire against Iran, and for a violation of the ceasefire by the Israeli regime against Lebanon,” estimated the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

The Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, considered that “the red lines crossed” in Gaza and Lebanon were equivalent “to direct war”in reference to Israel’s almost daily strikes in the Palestinian territory and its offensive in the neighboring country.

“Réponse”, Iran “est déterminé à mener des opérations défensives” and à “open new fronts”, warned the Guardians. But Donald Trump announced that he had obtained from the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, a commitment not to send troops to Beirut, and from the pro-Iranian Hezbollah a commitment to “completely cease fire”. “Israel will not attack them and they will not attack Israel”, he wrote.

Shortly after, the Lebanese embassy in the United States confirmed that Hezbollah had accepted an American proposal for a “mutual cessation of attacks” with Israel.

“No confidence in the words and promises of the enemy”: stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran?

Indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran, to end the war started on February 28 by a joint Israeli-American attack, have been stalling for weeks. Especially since Tehran reiterated on Monday that Iranian nuclear power was not part of “à ce stade” discussions, contrary to the expectations of Donald Trump, who affirmed on Sunday evening that a memorandum of understanding should stipulate “very clearly that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.”
