War in Iran: US bombs southern Iran, Tehran responds with strikes on US base in Kuwait

Tensions are rising a notch in the Middle East. On the night of Wednesday May 27 to Thursday May 28, the United States carried out new strikes in southern Iran, followed some time later by a response on an American base in Kuwait claimed by the Revolutionary Guards.

Yet another turnaround in the conflict in the Middle East: according to several American media outlets cited by BFMTV, the United States carried out new strikes on the night of May 27 to 28 that they presented as “defensive” on a base located in the south of Iran, after having shot down 4 Iranian drones. This operation is the second of its type this week.

The ceasefire now appears more and more fragile as Donald Trump said on May 27 that the Iranian proposals to end the conflict were not “satisfactory”. Three months after the start of the war, this new twist further complicates the chances of appeasement between Washington and Tehran.

New tensions around the Strait of Hormuz

On the Strait of Hormuz side, the situation has also become even more complicated. Iranian state television assured that Iran had struck 4 ships which, according to Iran, were trying to enter the Persian Gulf, “without coordination with security forces”. For the moment, no further details have been provided on the type of vessel or their nationality.

For its part, the American Treasury announced new sanctions for the Iranian authority in charge of the Persian Strait. In a press release relayed by the American authorities, Scott Bennett believes that Iran had a “desperate need for liquidity” and affirmed that any entity settling rights of passage with Iran in the strait could now also be targeted by American sanctions.
