US strikes missile launch sites in Iran

Tensions are still high between Iran and the United States, while Iran accuses the Americans of having violated the ceasefire declared on April 8. The Iranian press reported explosions on Tuesday, around midnight, in Bandar Abbas, in a coastal area near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had shot down and repelled drones and a fighter plane that had entered its airspace, according to the official Iranian Mizan news agency. He does not specify when the incident occurred, but assures that he will respond forcefully to any American strike.

In the same vein, the Iranian supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, declared in a press release that American military bases in the Middle East were no longer secure.

The US Middle East Command (CENTCOM) maintains that the strikes targeted ships attempting to lay mines, as well as missile launch sites, in southern Iran.

The last known American strikes date back to the beginning of May, when the south of the country was targeted, provoking a response from the Iranian army on boats in the Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic efforts in danger?

The strikes, which took place the day after Iranian and Qatari representatives met in Doha, could harm progress in peace negotiations.

The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that discussions —had resulted in many points of a possible memorandum of understanding with the United States. This does not mean, however, that Iran is about to sign, added Esmaeil Baghaei. Tehran is negotiating to end the conflict, but is not currently discussing its nuclear program, he also said.

The issue of Iran’s nuclear program is among the main sticking points between the two camps, as is Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon and Iranian demands for the unfreezing of billions of dollars in assets.

On Monday, Donald Trump also tempered hopes of a quick conclusion: Either the Iran deal will be an excellent and meaningful deal, or there will be no deala écrit le président américain.

Since the start of the war, the population had only access to national sites, banking services and state-approved applications, by connecting to the local intranet.
