The Israeli army claimed Wednesday to have killed Mohammed Awda during a strike in the north of the Gaza Strip, accusing him of having been designated as the new commander of the armed wing of the Palestinian movement Hamas.
On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz also claimed that the army had targeted Mohammed Awda during an air raid in Gaza City.
These statements come after violent Israeli bombings hit a densely populated area of central Gaza City on the eve of Eid al-Adha, killing at least one Palestinian woman and wounding several, according to medical sources.
Neither Hamas nor its armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, reacted immediately to the Israeli assertions.
These accusations come as several Israeli analysts and opposition figures warn of a possible military escalation in Gaza, believing that Benjamin Netanyahu could seek to strengthen tensions in a context marked by the possibility of a dissolution of the Knesset and the holding of early elections.
Since October 2023, more than 72,000 people have been killed and more than 172,000 injured in the Israeli offensive against Gaza, according to figures cited in the text, while 90% of the territory’s civilian infrastructure would have been destroyed before the announcement of a ceasefire in October last.
