The United States announced, on the night of Monday May 25 to Tuesday May 26, that it had carried out strikes in southern Iran, despite the ceasefire in place. Targets included missile launch sites.

Towards a new escalation in the conflict in the Middle East? The American army announced, on the night of Monday May 25 to Tuesday May 26, that it had carried out strikes in Iran, report several media outlets, including Le Monde. These strikes targeted missile launch sites, while a ceasefire officially remains in effect between the United States and Iran.

“US forces today conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran to protect our troops against threats posed by Iranian forces,” the US Middle East Command said in a statement on Monday (May 25). “The targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to lay mines,” it added.

According to information from Le Monde, Iranian media also reported that several explosions had been heard in the south of the country, in the port city of Bandar Abbas.

An agreement remains possible, says Marco Rubio

The American army specified in the press release “to show restraint during the current ceasefire”, in force since the beginning of April between Washington and Tehran. The strikes announced by the United States come in a context where the two countries have announced progress in recent days in negotiations to end the war.

According to American Secretary of State Marco Rubio, an agreement between the two countries remains possible despite the latest strikes. “There were some discussions in Qatar today, so we will see if we can make progress. I think the discussions revolve a lot around the precise wording of the initial text,” Marco Rubio said on Tuesday (May 26). The American Secretary of State specified that this would take “a few days”.

The head of American diplomacy also affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen. “The straits must be opened. They are going to be opened one way or another,” he warned.
