“The United States is moving further away from its former status every day,” warned Iranian Supreme Guide Mojtaba Khamenei in a message published this Tuesday, May 26.
“There will be no going back.” According to Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, American bases are now no longer
more protected by the Gulf countries,
he said in a written statement broadcast by state television this Tuesday, May 26. “It is certain that there will be no going back and that
the nations and territories of the region will no longer serve as shields for American bases”,
said Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since taking office in early March.
“The United States, which does not have
no more safe places in the region
to carry out aggression and establish military bases, are moving further away from their former status every day,” he added in this message published on the occasion of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.
Towards an agreement between Iran and the United States?
These statements come as
Iran and the United States are trying to reach an agreement
to end the war which began on February 28 and spread across the entire region, before a fragile ceasefire came into force on April 8. Iran reported progress on Monday while warning that an agreement was not imminent, with the positions of the two parties remaining distant. At the same time, the US Middle East Command (Centcom) announced that it had
hit missile launch sites
in southern Iran, dealing a blow to the diplomatic process. Iran has not officially confirmed the US attack, but state media reported explosions in the port city of Bandar Abbas, and announced that an investigation was underway to determine the origin.
And this Tuesday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed to have
shot down an American drone and fired on other aircraft
attempting to enter the country’s airspace, without specifying the date of these incidents. In a press release, they
warned “against any violation of the ceasefire
by the American army”, claiming to have a “legitimate and certain right to retaliate”. Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, succeeded his father Ali Khamenei, killed on the first day of the American-Israeli strikes on February 28, which triggered retaliations from Tehran throughout the region.
