The Sudanese army announced on Sunday that it had extended its control over the “Al-Baraka” area on the outskirts of the town of Kurmuk, in the state of Blue Nile (southeast), adjacent to the border with Ethiopia, after fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement, the army said that “as part of the ongoing military operations aimed at clearing every inch of territory desecrated by the rebellion (the RSF) and strengthening stability on the eastern border of the Blue Nile region, the forces of the 4th Infantry Division and the support forces made further progress on the ground by successfully carrying out decisive military operations in the Al-Baraka area.”
The statement added that the army forces “succeeded in defeating the Rapid Support militia, completely clearing the area and inflicting heavy losses on it and its allies from the Popular Movement/North forces, in addition to destroy and seize a certain number of military equipment.
It was also underlined that “this progress is part of military efforts aimed at strengthening security and stability in the region, protecting citizens and preventing smuggling and human trafficking operations.” “humans at the border where rebel forces are active.”
No comments have been issued by the Rapid Support Forces at this time.
In recent weeks, Blue Nile State has been the scene of increasing clashes leading to the displacement of thousands of people in several areas and towns of the state.
The Sudanese army now controls large parts of the region, while the SPLM-N has been fighting the government since 2011, demanding autonomy for the South Kordofan and Blue Nile regions.
Since the start of the conflict in April 2023 between the army and the RSF, linked to the integration of this paramilitary force into the army, Sudan has been facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. The war caused famines, killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
