Faced with the intensification of security, economic and climatic crises, Africa reaffirms the priority of African solutions in the resolution of conflicts. In 2025, the continent will concentrate more than 50 armed conflicts, or nearly 40% of global conflicts, while the Sahel and the Horn of Africa will record more than half of the 7,555 deaths linked to terrorism in 2024. To deal with this, the African Architecture of Peace and Security coordinates continental action through the Peace and Security Council, the Panel of the Wise and the Continental Early Warning System.
“Going forward, we estimate that the security situation will remain positive, although fragile, with localized risks of violence, particularly where residual armed groups compete for influence and resources. It will also be essential to continue cooperation and support the national defense and security forces, in collaboration with the AU, in order to consolidate progress. HAS”
Humphrey Nyone, MINUSCA Force Commander – Zambia
Driven by Agenda 2063 and the “Silencing the Guns” initiative, the African Union favors preventive diplomacy, political dialogue and post-conflict reconstruction. The crises in Sudan, the DRC, the Sahel and Libya have resulted in the displacement of 45.7 million people since 2020, reinforcing the urgency of a coordinated African response.
“The continued support of the Security Council will be essential to peacekeeping missions. If we want lasting peace, we will need to strengthen the capacities of the internal security forces and the armed forces. HAS”
Humphrey Nyone, MINUSCA Force Commander – Zambia
At the same time, the economic consequences of international crises, notably the surge in energy prices and threats to food security, are further weakening African economies. Faced with these challenges, the continent’s leaders are calling for a more balanced partnership with the United Nations in order to strengthen African resilience, stability and sovereignty, while consolidating African conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms.
