Niger: the army announces the launch of two new operations on the Algerian and Chadian borders

The Nigerien military authorities have announced the launch of two new military operations on the borders of Algeria and Chad. “Faced with the evolution of security threats and the immensity of the Sahelo-Saharan theater of operations, Operation Garkoi was restructured in order to gain in efficiency, responsiveness and coordination operational”, announced the military command in a press release published on the official information website of the Nigerien army.

“This reorganization led to the creation of two tactical headquarters for separate operations,” added the same source, specifying that the first operation called “AKARASSE” covers the departments of Arlit and Iferouane bordering Algeria and the second called “KLAFOKI” covers the department of Bilma bordering Chad.

A vast expanse of desert, the border between Niger and Algeria is plagued by incursions by terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as arms and drug trafficking networks.
