The FBI is offering $200,000 for any information that could lead to the arrest of a former American Air Force intelligence officer, charged in 2019 with spying for Iran.
Monica Witt, a former American soldier and US Air Force counter-espionage agent, disappeared in 2013 in Iran, where she defected. Since then, the FBI has gone after him “for his alleged involvement in criminal activities, including espionage and conspiracy to commit espionage.”
And even 13 years later, Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the Washington office’s counterintelligence and cyber defense division, is convinced that “someone has information about her whereabouts.” Thursday, May 14, in a press release, the office announced a reward of $200,000 for any information that could lead to his arrest.
“Monica Witt allegedly betrayed her oath to the Constitution more than ten years ago by defecting to Iran and providing the Iranian regime with national defense information. She likely continues to support its illicit activities,” explains Daniel Wierzbicki in the FBI press release.
The American served her country’s army between 1997 and 2008. During these ten years in the Air Force, Monica Witt, and especially from 2003, according to CNN, her work consisted of counterespionage missions that took her to the Middle East. In 2010, the soldier worked for the American government as a contractor.
“Information classified ‘secret’ and ‘top secret'”
“Her military service and her contract employment gave her access to information, classified ‘secret’ and ‘top secret’, relating to foreign intelligence and counter-espionage, including the real names of undercover American intelligence agents,” it is specified in the FBI press release.
In February 2019, well after Monica Witt’s disappearance, Deputy Attorney General John Demers indicted Monica Witt. According to him, the military revealed to Iran the existence of a “highly classified intelligence collection program” and the identity of an American intelligence officer, “putting his life in danger”. It specifies that between January 2012 and approximately May 2015, Monica Witt provided Iran with “documents and information relating to the national defense of the United States”.
Furthermore, the FBI press release specifies that Monica Witt “would also have carried out research on behalf of the Iranian regime in order to allow it to target its former colleagues within the American government.”
Finally, the indictment also targets four Iranians for conspiracy, attempted computer intrusion and aggravated identity theft.
