While the Senate is preparing to examine the update of the budget devoted to the armies, which notably provides for an increase of 36 billion euros, Senator du Lot intervened at the podium on May 5, 2026 to demand that the government tell “the truth to French women and French.”
During his speech, Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure described a “world that is turning upside down”, evoking “for the first time since 1945, the threat of a high intensity conflict which can no longer be ignored on our continent”. “Yes, the world is changing and France must adapt,” declared the parliamentarian who believes that “the budgetary effort is essential because our capability priorities must quickly become more coherent, with more munitions, more drones, more personnel. In the hemicycle, Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure nevertheless wanted to bring up the subject of “the acceptability” of this additional effort, regretting that the budget update does not answer the question of “consent to the preservation of peace”. “Madam Minister, we owe the truth to the French. Our deficit is growing. Our debt is growing. Without new revenue, how can we promise 36 billion more for defense without telling our fellow citizens that this will result mechanically in a decline in public services, in new school closures, in medical deserts which will gain ground? We will never be able to accept this collateral damage,” declared the senator, echoing realities already at work in the Lot department.
Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure then recalled the proposals made alongside his parliamentary group “to mobilize new resources, without placing the burden on the most modest”. “Because we want additional resources for our defense and for our public services, we proposed taxing the wealthiest taxpayers. Because we are loyal to Republican patriotism, we have proposed a defense booklet in order to mobilize the savings of the French who wish it and who have the means: a way of strengthening the necessary Army-Nation link. The elected official from Lot also asked the Government “to assume responsibility for saying that we cannot mobilize billions for our defense, while preserving the wealthiest with fiscal immobility. “Before the Minister of the Armed Forces Catherine Vautrin, Jean-Marc Vayssouze-Faure declared that “rearming our country requires involving those who have the greatest means”, denouncing “those who use demagoguery by ensuring that this new budgetary effort will be painless. The senator finally recalled that “defending France is not just about voting for budget increases for our armies. It means preserving all of the pillars that hold a Nation together: school, health, social cohesion, territorial communities and collective security. HAS”
