“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE-DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9, 10 and 11) in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” announced Donald Trump, on his Truth Social network, on the eve of Victory Day in Russia.
“This ceasefire will include the suspension of all military activity, as well as an exchange of prisoners up to 1,000 prisoners from each country,” continues the American president.
Shortly after Donald Trump’s announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded its implementation. “I thank the President of the United States and his team for their productive diplomatic engagement. We count on the United States to ensure that the Russian side respects these agreements “, he wrote, on social networks He ordered the Ukrainian army not to attack the May 9 parade in Moscow.
For its part, Moscow confirmed the three-day truce and the exchange of prisoners with kyiv. “I confirm that the Russian side accepts the initiative proposed by American President Donald Trump regarding a ceasefire for an exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine,†the Russian President’s diplomatic advisor, Yuri Ushakov, told journalists.
“Negotiations continue”
Moscow had unilaterally requested a cease-fire for May 8 and 9, but it had not been accepted by kyiv, which had itself requested a cease-fire the previous days – which Russia had violated. The cease-fire announced by Donald Trump came from of a request “made directly by (him)”. “I greatly appreciate his acceptance by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky”, writes the billionaire.
The American president hopes that this truce accepted by both parties “will be the beginning of the end of a very long, murderous and hotly contested war.” “Negotiations are continuing to put an end to this major conflict, the most important since the Second World War, and we are getting closer every day,” he adds.
Talks aimed at ending the conflict have taken a back seat since the outbreak of war in the Middle East in late February. On Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky nevertheless said he hoped that American negotiators would come to Ukraine in the coming weeks for new negotiations.
