The Israeli army destroyed a monastery and a school run by the Sisters of the Holy Savior in the town of Yaroun in southern Lebanon on Friday, according to the official national news agency.

The school “was considered one of the most important educational institutions in the region,” having trained thousands of students over the years from various cities in the Bint Jbeil district, the agency said.

Its destruction constitutes “a major loss both educationally and socially,” it added.

Israel has been conducting an offensive in Lebanon since March 2, killing more than 2,600 people and displacing over a million.

A ten-day ceasefire, starting on April 17, was later extended until May 17, but Israel continues to violate it daily through airstrikes and house demolitions.

Furthermore, Israel also maintains what it calls a “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon, claiming it is intended to prevent attacks from Hezbollah. A previous ceasefire was reached in November 2024.
