Russian President Proposes Ceasefire in Ukraine

  • The Russian president proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine on Wednesday, the day Russia celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.
  • He assured that Donald Trump, with whom he spoke on the phone, supported this initiative.

In a phone call with his American counterpart Donald Trump on Wednesday, Vladimir Putin said he was ready to declare a ceasefire for the duration of Victory Day celebrations, according to his diplomatic advisor Yuri Ushakov. Since 2023, Ukraine has celebrated the victory of 1945 on May 8, like Western countries.

American Support, According to Moscow

The Kremlin added that Donald Trump had “actively supported this initiative, noting that this celebration marks our common victory.” President Trump, for his part, said he had a “very good” conversation with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday, indicating he advocated for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The conversation focused mainly on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, while the Kremlin stated that the two leaders also paid “special attention to the situation in Iran and the Persian Gulf.”

In 2025, the Russian president had ordered his soldiers to observe a ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10, on the occasion of these celebrations that are typically followed by a military parade in front of the Kremlin. However, Ukraine accused the Russian army of attacking the entire front line, citing hundreds of ceasefire violations. The Russian forces, on the other hand, claimed to be “strictly observing” the ceasefire, stating they were only “responding” to Ukrainian violations.
