At Visibrain’s 3rd annual Meet Up on March 18th in Paris, Xavier Tytelman shared insights from a study on pro-Russian propaganda mechanisms that circumvent artificial intelligence (AI) and social media algorithms to push Kremlin narratives. Tytelman, a seasoned defense and aerospace consultant and former military pilot, extended the discussion with the Communicant Blog on the concerning issue of disinformation impacting businesses and tarnishing their reputation.

Xavier Tytelman, an active figure in vigilance and disinformation, emphasized the need for vigilant attention, especially in geopolitically and militarily charged contexts. Drawing from his military aviation and crisis management experience at COGIC, where he monitored social media channels, Tytelman highlighted two distinct scenarios of reputation attacks on companies.

First, legitimate attacks target companies bypassing economic sanctions on Russia by continuing sales, including non-weapon products, and supporting the Russian war economy. These cases, like Leroy Merlin and Auchan, attracted public backlash urging them to cease such activities to avoid boycotts. Additionally, defense companies like Safran and Thales faced scrutiny for exporting parts to Kazakhstan for Russian fighter jet maintenance without proper disclosures.

In the second scenario, Russian-backed campaigns support anti-arming movements against Ukraine by disseminating propaganda and disinformation leading to tangible repercussions. Companies like Rheinmetall and defense players in Bourges, France, faced orchestrated attacks. Influencers, including Florian Philippot and Xavier Moreau, propagate Russian narratives targeting pro-Ukraine companies, particularly in the defense sector.

The wave of disinformation extends to fake news websites, amplified by AI-generated content camouflaged as legitimate news sources. Collaborative investigations by NewsGuard exposed AI chatbots amplifying false Russian propaganda, underscoring the need for companies to counter such narratives effectively.

Tytelman’s insights shed light on evolving disinformation tactics online, emphasizing active vigilance and swift, coordinated responses from companies to safeguard their reputation and integrity in the face of ongoing hybrid warfare threats.
