Invited by BFM Politique, Maud Bregeon announced the repatriation as early as this Sunday, April 19, of the body of the French soldier who died the day before on the front line. His injured comrades from the regiment will be returning in the coming days.
Florian Montorio’s family should soon be able to pay their respects to his body. The body of the sergeant-chef, killed on Saturday in an ambush in South Lebanon, is expected to be “repatriated this Sunday” April 19, as announced by Maud Bregeon on BFM Politique.
“I would like to start this program by having thoughts, like all of our compatriots, for Florian Montorio,” declared the government spokesperson. “What happened is extremely serious. Full light must be shed on the circumstances of his death.”
The government spokesperson clarified that “neither the date nor the arrangements have been decided” for a national tribute.
The other wounded soldiers “in serious condition”
She also provided details on the health condition of the other French soldiers who were wounded, also hit by bullets.
“They are in serious condition,” she detailed. “The latest news is reassuring, even though it is necessary to remain cautious in this context. They are still in Beirut where they are given the best care.”
Their repatriation could be decided in the coming days according to the government spokesperson, who went over the circumstances of the attack. The minister delegated for energy recalled that the 17th Parachute Regiment of Montauban, which was operating “as part of the Finul, under the authority of the UN,” was attacked in an ambush “linked to an armed group.”
Regarding the ambush that occurred in the region of Deir-Kifa, it “is clearly linked to an armed group. There are obvious suspicions regarding the involvement of Hezbollah and full light will have to be shed,” urged the government spokesperson on Sunday.
On Saturday, Emmanuel Macron had already indicated that “everything points to Hezbollah being responsible,” a claim that the Shiite Islamist group allied with Iran immediately denied.
The French president quickly spoke with Joseph Aoun, his Lebanese counterpart, and Maud Bregeon reiterated that Paris expected cooperation from the Lebanese government to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
